There is a rugged, whitewater river flowing and turning through deep canyons in southern West Virginia. The New River and its gorge is among the oldest rivers on the continent.....and it is now a National Park - our NEWEST national park to be exact. The park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the New River. Of course we won't get to see it all....but we will see some of the most interesting features the area has to offer.
On this short trip you will get to view the stunning gorge itself and one of the most iconic bridges in the country - one that spans the entire width of the gorge. You will photograph a creek with a very famous grist mill and you will get to view and shoot a few extremely beautiful waterfalls and the areas that surround them. And then we will throw in some history as well as you get to learn about and photograph remnants of the beginnings of the area.
The first shoot starts early on Oct 21st, 2025. But we will have an introductory meeting the afternoon of the 20th. So you should plan to be in Beckley by late afternoon of the 20th.
Cancellation policy: This workshop must be full to run. So there will be no refunds offered on this workshop after Feb 1, 2025. It is a very good idea to look into travel insurance for any non-refundable portion of the trip.

We do not have a group block for this trip due to the smaller number of participants. Please note the workshop starts at sunrise on the 21st with an introductory meeting the evening of the 20th. So you will need to be in Beckley on the 20th by 6pm.
We will end the workshop on the evening of the 23rd.
Local Airport:
A numer of people will drive to this workshop, but for those of you who need to fly in, the closest airport is Charleston, WV.

The drive from Charleston, WV to Beckley, WV is about an hour to the hotel.
Transportation
Major car rental companies are available at the airport. Participants will need to arrange their own transportation to, from, and during the workshop. Participants may wish to share the cost of a rental car. Some locations on the workshop have very limited space for vehicles and we may request participants to carpool to a few of the shooting locations anyway.
For this Workshop:
There should be no extreme temperatures on this workshop, but you should still plan on bringing a number of layers for whatever temperatures we may encounter.
Gear - you should try to bring anything from a super-wide (14-24) to mid zoom (24-70, 24-105) to a moderate zoom (70-200, 70-300). You won't need anything extremely long on this workshop.
Activity Level - this one is not all THAT strenuous, but there will be some hiking.....2 hikes no more than about 2.5 miles round trip and a few shorter walks. There will also be a small amount of rock scrambling on this workshop. You may wish to bring a set of hiking poles with you.
Accessories - It is not required that you purchase any specific equipment for this workshop. With that said, however, there are a couple of filters that are very important to possess and whose effects cannot be replicated in Photoshop. A circular polarizer is very commonly used in landscape photography and we will be shooting several waterfalls, so a neutral density filter would be handy.
